According to the EAT-Lancet Commission report, healthy diets with more plant-based foods will be key to ensuring sustainable food systems and a healthier planet and people.
It’s no surprise then that we’re seeing a significant growth in the vegan, vegetarian and flexitarian markets. Understanding the modern plant-based consumer and what is driving their adoption of plant-based diets has never been more important for those in retail and product development.
Who is the plant-based consumer?
Research estimates that 60% of global consumers eat plant-based meals at least once a week.1 Other reports reveal that across the world, there are now more than 65% of consumers who are eating more plant-based food and beverages.2 In Australia, 45% of consumers are actively trying to reduce the amount of animal products they eat.3
Despite this increase, there isn’t one single definition of a plant-based consumer. Younger people (aged 15-44) are more likely to report that they are trying to follow a plant-based diet.4
According to 2021 consumer research, the most common reason people choose to follow a plant-based diet is that it makes them feel healthier. This is followed by digestive health and fitness. Environmental concerns and animal rights are the sixth and eighth most common reasons respectively.5 This is consistent with other research findings that consumers are generally more focused on adopting healthier lifestyles for the long-term.6
The trends driving plant-based eating
It’s important to understand why consumers are opting for more flexitarian and plant-based diets. It’s also important to have a good picture of the trends underpinning the shift.
The simple answer is choice. It is easier than ever before to make healthier and tastier plant-based choices. Half of Australian restaurants now cater to vegan diets.2 There is also significant innovation in plant-based meat and plant-based pantry staples.
In fact, consumers are demanding new product development and a greater proliferation of plant-based ingredients, with greater interest in areas such as sustainable protein crops.7
Interestingly, according to IRI, it’s the mention of plant ingredients that is more appealing to consumers than ‘vegan’ or ‘vegetarian’ labels. Packaging and promotions that callout that ‘you’re getting more plants, more nutrients’ are the way forward.2
There is also an element of plant-curiosity that is driving the uptick. 41% of consumers report having tried plant-based alternatives because they wanted to try something new.8 Consumers are more adventurous than in the past, seeking out new flavours and ingredients to enhance their diet and lifestyle.
Capitalising on the plant-based trend
Where to next? How can you make the most of the plant-based boom?
First, you need to consider the brands you stock on your shelves. Consider some of these leading plant-based brands in your search:
Energy and snack bars from CLIF Bar with all plant-based ingredients and a priority on supported agriculture.
Vegan jerky from Noble Jerky with more than 14g of plant-based protein in each packet.
A range of innovative protein powders, baking mixes and more from Macro Mike, which was founded with the vision of making the best tasting vegan protein on the planet.
Easy-to-use and minimally processed vegan sauce alternatives and the top-selling Mac ‘N Cheez range from Plantasy Foods.
Vegan chocolate and chocolate spreads from European chocolatier, Vego.
In the switch to plant-based eating, many consumers also consider their broader lifestyle habits. Adding plant-based home and self-care products, such as Ethique Solid Bars, the Koala Eco cleaning and personal care range or ACURE skincare, broadens your appeal to these consumers.

In recent years sports nutrition has pushed into the mainstream.1 It’s no longer just for building muscle. Consumers look to sports nutrition to support their proactive approach to health maintenance and better-for-you options to enhance their active lifestyles.2
As an industry, sports nutrition is booming. Globally it’s a market worth more than AUD $55 billion with a predicted compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.5%.3 With the increasing expansion to a broader consumer category, there has never been a better time for retailers to capitalise.
We’ve identified four sports nutrition trends driven by consumer demand and preferences so you can make the most of the opportunities in the market.
Traditionally sports nutrition products are chosen for their efficacy over other considerations. But with the uptake in adoption by lifestyle consumers, flavour is increasingly important. It’s important to 41% of consumers, coming in third behind health and cost considerations.4
While chocolate and vanilla flavours remain go-to favourites, more and more consumers are reaching for innovative flavour combinations and new tastes.
From the trending to the nostalgic and mouthwateringly enticing, here’s just a sample of the exciting flavour innovations you can offer your customers from a selection of leading brands:
Happy Way Biscoff-inspired Caramel Biscuit Protein Powder
Macro Mike Caramel Cinnamon Bun Peanut Plant Protein
In an analysis of Amazon sales data, plant-based protein powder was revealed to have a 25% market share (second behind whey protein powder at 50%) but with 39% year-over-year (YoY) growth, it was the fastest growing segment.5
This follows a general dietary trend towards plant-based eating with 73% of global consumers saying they eat less meat as it is a healthier option. 26% of people also now identify as flexitarian.6
What are the options for tasty plant-based proteins for your customers? These top-selling brands are the place to start:
Macro Mike offers both Peanut and Almond proteins with a recent re-formulation to enhance the products and taste even further.
In the protein snack bar market, CLIF Bar is a leader with only plant-based ingredients and plant-based protein used across range.
Essential Hemp offers an innovative protein powder alternative made from hemp protein.
Protein isn’t the only thing booming. Uptake of pre-workout supplements as a sports nutrition trend is also on the rise. In the Amazon analysis, sales of sports nutrition supplements, including pre and post workout supplements, saw YoY growth of 41%. In this sub-category, pre-workout supplements lead the way with a market share of 65% and YoY growth of 45%.5
Pre-workout supplements are designed to help boost energy and performance to maximise a workout. The rise in these supplements comes back to consumers looking for products and nutrition to help them stay active.
For premium, natural pre-workout supplements to stock your shelves, look to brands and products like:
Research has shown that consumers who haven’t yet used sports nutrition products are sceptical of the benefits of the products.6 It’s not just clean ingredients that are important. Transparency around ingredients and sustainability is also key.
This is another of the sports nutrition trends that’s influenced by broader consumer preferences with increasing demands for clear labelling and natural ingredients.7
Give your customers clean sports nutrition alternatives with these popular brands:
Happy Way sports nutrition products are made with natural and organic ingredients and free from preservatives, artificial sweeteners and flavours.
One of the core food values of the CLIF Bar brand is about prioritising people and the planet by using organic ingredients and proudly supporting sustainable agriculture.

Whilst at-home baking has always been a popular pastime, the exponential increase in this culinary “hometainment” hobby has exploded over the last year, with consumers searching for more and more ways to bake at home.
At-home baking continues to be a trend for 2021 and beyond, boosted by the influence of social media, an increase in accessible online baking classes and the need for people to ‘find their tribe’ and connect with those who share the same interests.
Couple this with an ever-increasing awareness of health and wellbeing and this is where an abundance of better-for-you healthy baking products come into their own.
Ibisworld reports that Australians are favouring healthier snacking options over traditional biscuits and treats. However, they are still looking to satisfy their sweet cravings. Today, it’s not just about meeting a craving, consumers are wanting indulgent-style products that still meet their nutritional needs and don’t derail their health goals.
With at-home baking becoming more popular, consumers are increasingly becoming more curious about using innovative products in their baking to create a better-for-you twist on old favourites or something new entirely.
Luckily, there are a number of manufacturers that are meeting the demand for these fulfilling, comforting, yet functional foods, with a wide range of innovative baking products ready for you to stock on your shelves.
BETTER BAKING BASICS
Better-for-you products encompass the ever-growing preference towards more natural ingredients. This also extends into the baking world.
BRAGGExtra Virgin Olive Oil is a multipurpose baking staple that adds the heart health benefits of olive oil into cakes. It’s also certified organic, gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan friendly.
Their Apple Cider Vinegar is also a top-selling, household staple, that’s hugely versatile and is often used in baking for its leavening and flavour enhancing properties, creating a better crumb.
One of the most common baking basics are choc buttons! So it’s no surprise that the decadent Vego Fine Hazelnut Chocolate Melts are ‘the’ melts for more indulgent at-home bakes. Tasting like the centre of a Ferrero Rocher and 100% vegan, it’s a chocolate-lovers baking essential. They are certified organic, gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, fair trade and can be used both in traditional baking and as a comforting hot chocolate drink.
Gone are the days of limited choice when it comes to flours. With the realisation that many people struggle with food intolerances and restrictive diets, there has been an abundance of suppliers who provide alternative flours for innovative baking. The Gluten Free Food Co. provides both a gluten-free, grain-free flour blend and a gluten-free, wholemeal flour blend. They are both organic and high in fibre, featuring a helpful recipe for consumers to try on the packaging.
Australian grown and made, Green Banana Baking Flour from Natural Evolution is 100% gluten free, made from green bananas and grown in tropical north Queensland. Boasting impressive gut-health benefits thanks to its resistant starch content, it’s an on-trend addition that’s easily added to most baked goods.
Another great gluten-free flour alternative isSensory Mill’s Apple Flour, it is made of 100% carefully milled dried apples and can substitute ¼-½ of the flour amount required for most baking recipes. It provides an excellent source of fibre, is 98% fat free and is vegan friendly. It also adds a touch of sweetness, allowing consumers to use less sugar in their recipes.
MAKE IT WITH A MIX

At Unique Health Products we stock some of the biggest natural health brands in Australia. We are proud of the innovation and leading market position of our brands and the way they drive natural product packaging trends.
Whether they’re opting to follow a keto diet, transitioning to more plant-based meals or swapping main meals for regular snacks, Australian eating habits are changing. Despite the desire to eat healthier, they’re not willing to deny themselves a little indulgence.
IbisWorld research has found that the health and wellbeing concerns of Australians have increased over the last five years. As a nation, we are more aware of our health and the choices we make. The attitudes and preferences of consumers are changing, and this presents a great opportunity for the natural health industry.
This change is happening in the context of natural health trending mainstream. Grocery aisles are integrating, innovation in the natural health industry is thriving and consumers have an expectation of seeing more eco-friendly and healthier options as they do their shopping.
But that doesn’t mean consumers can’t also indulge in a healthy treat that aligns with their health goals. Cater to these customers who want to have their cake and eat it too with a selection of better-for-you healthy indulgences.
Combining convenience with healthy indulgence, packaged baking mixes are a simple way for consumers to have a healthier treat.
The chocolate market is a thriving one. As the interest in healthier living rises, so too do the healthier chocolate alternatives available to consumers.
What does healthier chocolate look like? For starters, there are protein-packed VitaWerx chocolates, vegan HeroCup nut butter cups, organic, fairtrade Bennetto chocolate blocks or the keto-friendly Little Zebra Chocolates. Consumers are spoiled for choice.
There is no denying that the opportunity for snack sales is booming but not everyone has a sweet tooth. For those people, an indulgence may be more of the savoury kind.
In the same vein as the convenient baking mixes, healthier mix-and-eat desserts are popular options.

Packaging matters. It’s often the first impression a customer will have of a product. And it can mean the difference between a product flying off the shelves… or a hidden gem sitting stagnant.
Understanding the trends in natural product packaging can help you to merchandise your store to maximise the sales opportunity. We share our insights into what’s hot in natural product packaging and why it matters to you.
Green… and red and pink and blue…
Traditionally when people think of natural product packaging, they think green and brown. How else will people know a product is natural if the packaging isn’t green or brown?
The industry and its consumers have come a long way. Consumers are more sophisticated and educated about the benefits of natural health products. The evolution of natural product packaging reflects this shift.
Amazing Oils is one of the latest natural health brands to modernise their packaging with a bright and bold new look. Featuring colour blocks of red, blue and purple, the packaging is easy to read and presents a streamlined look on the shelf.
With more and more retail stores moving towards the integration of natural health products alongside non-health products, including major grocery chains such as Coles, this packaging trend only serves to help natural products stand out more on shelves, boosting your sales in the process.
Calling out health and natural claims
If an objection to integration is “how will people be able to identify natural health products if they are scattered through the aisles?” The answer is in the packaging.
Despite their ability to now blend somewhat seamlessly into the shelves alongside regular grocery or beauty products, natural products have a powerful tool in their arsenal. And they’re not afraid to use it.
That is, they can use their packaging to be clear about their ingredients, sustainability or natural health claims.
The packaging of ACURE skin and hair care products is simple and clean. The colour block design draws the eye of the consumer… and then they see the words “100% vegan”. Right on the front of the packaging.
It’s a similar case for Keto Naturals. While the name of the brand does give away the keto-friendly nature of the products, the front of the packaging showcases the benefits of the products – keto and paleo friendly, vegan and gluten free among them.
Macro Mike is another example of a brand that doesn’t hesitate to use prime real estate on packaging to highlight the gut-friendly, 100% natural, plant-based benefits (just to name a few) of their products.
The rising number of vegans and consumers who care about what’s inside the products they buy are looking for these claims.
54% of consumers factor the sustainability of product packaging into their buying decisions
52% of consumers actively seek information on the sustainability of product packaging
73% of consumers are willing to dig deeper into their pockets to pay more for eco-friendly packaging
This is where natural product packaging has the upper hand. Like the recycled plastic packaging of Koala Eco. Or the compostable packaging of Ethique. Or the recycled cardboard tubes that house the PATCH bandages.
Brands in the natural health industry have been considering and innovating the sustainability of their packaging for many years. This is a trend that has been driven by conscious brands answering to consumer demand.
