Macro Mikeis a 100% Australian owned company that’s turning plant-based healthy treats and protein on its head. But it all started with one man’s struggle with food intolerances…
Owner and Founder, Mike Kellett, had battled both gluten and dairy intolerances for many years before he decided to start baking gluten-free, macro and vegan-friendly treats. Frustrated with the lack of options available, Mike took the best quality wholefoods from every corner of the world and relentlessly experimented to create healthy treats.
Mike began sharing his recipes with his online community and the response was incredibly positive. It was then that he realised there was a major gap in the market. Fuelled by an enormous passion for all things natural and tasty, Mike launched Macro Mike in 2016 with one mission in mind:
“…to give back to anyone who feels they have ever had to restrict themselves from food; the most glorious natural resource we have on this planet.”
At the time, the market was saturated with brands replicating each other, selling almost identical products and fighting for shelf space. It was considered crazy to even attempt something in the health and fitness industry, but Mike trusted his vision, found his tribe and had faith that the product would speak for itself.
Feedback from consumers of existing plant-based/vegan proteins was less than positive with many commenting that they were chalky, sandy and bland. So, Mike took it upon himself to create the smoothest, great-tasting, plant-based protein available.
And if his raving fans are anything to go by, we’d say he did it! The peanut-powered protein powders come in wickedly tempting flavours and have a cult following from people across all walks of life.
But that wasn’t enough for Mike. In staying true to his mission, Mike also produces high-protein, plant-based baking mixes, powdered peanut butters, protein bars, and health and wellness supplements.
And it doesn’t stop there! Never willing to be outdone, the Macro Mike team are continuously innovating and released Australia’s only premium almond protein powder range, almond protein-based baking mixes, and flavoured, powdered almond butters.
Made from Californian almonds, it is the ultimate in smooth, creamy protein with no nutty aftertaste. It’s so neutral in taste that they’ve even created a high protein ‘Nice Cream’, a healthy ice cream alternative that simply requires frozen banana and milk of your choice!
In the first three years of business, Mike transformed his small brownie business that existed in the spare room of his tiny apartment into a fully-fledged food company with a state-of-the-art production facility, onsite storage and shipping warehouse in the heart of the Gold Coast.
His products are now in over 1,000 stores across Australia and the company has an incredibly loyal online following of more than 96K Instagram fans with whom they share endless recipe inspiration and free inspiring content.
We never quite know what will come next from Mike, but one thing is for sure… Mike’s a man on a mission and he’s only just getting started!

Convenience has long been king in Australian kitchens. But consumers are increasingly making the switch from traditional baking mixes to plant-based options. With the range of healthy baking mixes and vegan desserts in the market, it is no longer about sacrificing either health or flavour. Consumers are spoilt for choice and they have high expectations of retail shelves to deliver.
The plant-based switch
In 2019, Roy Morgan research revealed that nearly 2.5 million Australians now follow a vegetarian – or mostly vegetarian – diet. This sits on the back of a steady trend towards plant-based eating over the last decade.
The COVID-19 pandemic has only served to heighten the focus on health and quality ingredients. People are spending more time at home and in the kitchen and they want home baking options that allow them to whip up healthy treats with minimal effort.
As more and more people choose conscious diets with a focus on plant-based options, the demand for vegan desserts is going to continue to rise. Consumers are looking for flavour, convenience and quality… and healthy baking mixes tick all the boxes.
In-demand vegan desserts
At Unique Health Products we are ahead of the vegan desserts trend with many of our brands offering all natural baking mixes and quick to make desserts that are vegan-friendly but also high in on-trend, plant-based protein! Here is just a taste:

There’s an overarching theme emerging from this year’s events and it comes as no surprise — it revolves around preventative health, in particular, supporting the immune system. Aside from this, consumers are demanding even more from natural health brands and continue to seek out products developed with both a conscious and a specific purpose. Here are the top 5 emerging trends in natural health today:
Nutrition Business Journal estimates that sales of cold, flu and immunity supplements alone will reach $5.2 billion this year, with growth of 51.2% over 2019. The new awareness of immunity offers supplements an opportunity to be seen as more of a year-round regimen than a seasonal response. Star ingredients in hot demand include pre and probiotics thanks to the increasing awareness around gut health and immunity. According to Mintel, the number of internet searches for gut health grew 669% last year!
2. HIGH-PERFORMANCE BEAUTY
The global natural and organic personal care market is expected to grow even faster than food – at a compound annual growth rate of 11.1% by 2026. But consumers are now looking for natural beauty products that go one step further than just “simple” and “clean”. Technologically advanced, high-performing functional products are becoming more popular. The key to success is stocking a range of brands that are natural, trustworthy, transparent, and offer a point of difference with their chosen functional ingredients ie. vitamin C for anti-ageing and calendula to calm and soothe.
3. PLANET OVER PERSONAL GAIN
More and more consumers are moving from individual-centric to planet-centric decision making. They are increasingly aware of and concerned about sustainability issues and want the brands they trust to take appropriate actions to help reduce their impact. This spans across ingredient sourcing, packaging materials and actively giving back to charities and organisations making a difference. The rising demand for locally sourced and Australian made products has also come to the forefront of late as consumers look to support businesses closer to home. 90% of Australians aged 14+ say they are more likely to buy products made in Australia!
4. FUNCTIONAL BEVERAGES
A growing number of consumers are looking to adjust their drinking habits by seeking out better-for-you options. Conscious of excessive sugar intake and searching for products that do more than just hydrate, the functional beverage trend is gaining rapid momentum. 80% of consumers in a recent FMCG survey said they were planning to eat and drink more healthily because of the recent pandemic. In particular, consumers are looking for drinks that will help support their immune system with drinks high in vitamin C, omega 3s and other ingredients for immune health.
5. INGREDIENTS FOR DIY CREATIONS
Stress, anxiety and a strong desire to boost wellbeing and get a ‘feel good’ hit at home, has consumers increasingly eager to create their own home and personal care products such as face masks and cleaning products. Combined with a 44% increase in screen time and the popularity of DIY on social media, this trend offers consumers a triple-whammy ‘feel good’ effect thanks to a feeling of belonging, enjoying a personalised experience, and active participation in more sustainable consumerism.

In Australia, the snack bar market is expected to reach AUD $1 billion by 2024! With the ‘Snackification’ trend still going strong and consumer lifestyles getting more active with the warmer weather, the demand for healthy, convenient snack options is high.
In fact, recent research by Roy Morgan tracked the shopping habits of Australians over March and April this year. Their results showed that 66% of Australians bought savoury snacks and there was a significant increase in healthy-snack orders, which accounted for 54.7% of total packaged snack-food sales. That was the biggest moving sector in the healthy-snack category!
Snack company Livwell Emporium said in a statement, “as the frequency of snacking has increased and interest in veganism has gained momentum, so too has the demand for healthier, plant-based snacking options”. The company saw sales increase by 80% in the last six months as Australians sought out healthier options and plant-based alternatives.
The research also found that more than 62% of the adult population are “heavy” or “medium” snackers.

According to Neilsen Homescan research, in the four weeks ending 22 March 2020, the volume sales for long-life meals, bread mix, rice, flour and pasta have more than doubled!
These numbers mean the average Australian pantry is stocked with enough of these items to last two to three months. But they’re continuing to buy!
“Our recent analysis highlights some clear themes in consumer behaviour we can expect to see over the next few months,” says Managing Director of Nielsen Connect, Bernie Hughes.
“More time at home will give rise to more cooking and baking from scratch as consumers find creative ways to use up their pantry staples; but an increase in sales for convenient meal options also cater to smaller person households or those that are juggling the various demands of working from home and homeschooling.”
HOW TO PREP YOUR SHELVES FOR CHANGING CONSUMER DEMAND:
The Post-Carb Loading Diet Craze
The average Australian household has enough rice to see them through 65 days, pasta to last 63 days and enough noodles to last 55 days.
Due to the heavy carb storing, Mr Hughes predicts that, “Brands that focus on health and fitness in the future are likely to see strong demand from consumers who see a renewed sense of importance in staying healthy.”
Have these low carb and keto-friendly options on standby:
Herocup Keto Peanut Butter Cup
Lakanto Monkfruit and Erythritol Sweetener
PBCo Low Carb Crumbs & Lower Carb Rice
Slim Secrets Bare Bar
Botanika Blends Protein Powders
Macro Mike Brownie Mix
The Monday Food Co Keto Cake Mix
Vitawerx Keto Mayo
Australian households are likely to make more of an effort to cook from scratch and attempt to make meals outside of their usual repertoire.
Nielsen Digital Content Ratings data shows that on the last weekend of March, Australians spent 71% more time online with food and cooking content when compared to the last weekend of February.
“We anticipate that shoppers will begin to think more creatively about how they cook over the next few weeks,” explains Mr Hughes.
Let your customers get creative with these easy additions to new and exciting dishes:
Essential Hemp Hemp Seeds
Nuilife Coconut Sugar
Nutritionist Choice Sushi Nori
Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar
Dandies Mini Vanilla Marshmallows
Natural Evolution Dough Mix
Organic Times Choc Drops
Since many families are juggling the challenges of working from home and looking after children – shoppers have also stocked up on quick-and-easy meal solutions, including prepared meals, canned vegetables, canned soup, pasta and sauce.
Instant, effortless or really easy. These products tick the boxes for healthy convenience:
Uptons Naturals Ready Meal Kits
Nutritionist Choice Instant Noodles
Plantasy Foods Mac n Cheez
Upbeat Instant Meals
Plantasy Foods Gravy Mix
Nuilife Teriyaki Sauce
SPRING CLEANING IN AUTUMN
Toilet paper and hand sanitiser are still very hard to come by in-store and online. However, Australian shoppers are also stockpiling other household products including general cleaners, disinfectants and dishwashing detergent.
Disinfectant sales are up 102% on a year-over-year basis.
Try these popular, natural brands:
“Consumer habits tend to change over time, but the COVID-19 outbreak is forcing Australian consumers to reconfigure their lives, their habits and their spending patterns at a speed and scale we have never seen.
“With households now in lockdown and experiencing what it means to have restricted movement, limited access to physical stores and expanded reliance on digital connectivity, it is important to continue to monitor these trends as we adjust to a new normal,” concludes Mr Hughes.
