Electrolytes – The Sports Hydration Heroes

WE’VE ALL HEARD OF ELECTROLYTES, BUT HOW MANY OF YOUR CUSTOMERS KNOW THE BENEFITS OF ELECTROLYTES? HOW MANY KNOW THE CONSEQUENCES OF ELECTROLYTE IMBALANCE?

Electrolytes are best known for their hydrating benefits and common presence in sports drinks.

In an average week, 1.5 million Australians
(aged 14+) consume sports drinks.

While the sports hydration category as a whole is dominated by big brands such as Powerade and Gatorade, the third most commonly consumed sports hydration category is health drinks.

Out of all Australians that consumed a sports drink in an average week, 11% where from the health drink category. With consumers becoming more conscious of sugar as well as natural sports nutrition alternatives, we expect this category to
only grow.

With this said, exposing a natural or healthy product’s electrolyte contents can be just the USP (unique selling point) that tips a customer to purchase.

Natural products that contain high levels of electrolytes include nuun dissolvable electrolyte tablets, Necta Maple Water, Nakula Coconut Water and CLIF BLOKs.

WHAT ARE ELECTROLYTES?

Electrolytes are electrically-charged particles (ions) found in bodily fluids – this includes blood and urine.

The substances come in many different forms including sodium, chlorine, potassium, phosphate, magnesium and calcium.

Electrolytes are found naturally in food and drinks or through supplements.

WHY ARE ELECTROLYTES IMPORTANT?

Electrolytes are essential to ensure a healthy, balanced body.

The ions carry an electrical energy necessary for many body functions. These include muscle contractions and transmission of nerve impulses.

Consistent, adequate supply of these important nutrients helps the body to reach its optimal performance. This could explain why drinks that contain electrolytes are often referred to as ‘sports hydration’.

Sweat releases electrolytes, so in order to replenish them, many consumers turn to electrolyte drinks/sports hydration.

Keeping electrolytes balanced within the body allows it to maintain proper water amounts, balance blood acidity, help assist muscles and more.

If the electrolytes are not replaced or are over-consumed, this could lead to
an imbalance.

THE SIGNS OF ELECTROLYTE IMBALANCE

Electrolyte imbalance can cause many different symptoms which could include:

– Irregular heartbeat
– Weakness
– Bone disorders
– Twitching
– Blood pressure changes
– Confusion
– Seizures
– Numbness
– Nervous system disorders
– Fatigue
– Vomiting
– Diarrhoea
– Convulsions
– Muscle spasms

The causes of an imbalance can be as simple and obvious as heat exposure or severe dehydration, which is more common in the warmer months. On the contrary, the causes can also be very complicated and can stem from certain drugs
or treatments.

Ensure customers are aware to replenish electrolytes when they are lost to escape these symptoms and avoid compromising performance.

Electrolytes are equally as vital as the food and water your customers consume during exercise.

WHO BUYS ELECTROLYTES?

An athlete’s goal is to reach their optimal performance, so it’s no surprise that electrolytes predominately appeal to this type of consumer. Although, this isn’t where electrolyte sales have to stay. Everyone needs them for a healthy body, so the potential to widen the reach with such products is almost limitless.

Try taste testing and educating all sorts of consumers about electrolytes to help push your sales past the typical athletic buyer. Summer is the perfect time to
do this!

WHAT PRODUCTS CONTAIN ELECTROLYTES?

NUUN
nuun proves that healthy hydration can be convenient and tasty. The electrolyte-enhanced drink tabs are gluten free, dairy and soy free, safe for clean sport, made from plant-based ingredients and are available in incredible flavours. Guest Blog: Retailer Rates Wholesome Chow

Essentially Health logoESSENTIALLY HEALTH IS ONE OF OUR DRIVEN ONLINE RETAILERS THAT SELL A RANGE OF HEALTHY, ORGANIC, NATURAL AND VEGAN PRODUCTS.

Delicia, owner of Essentially Health, has built the business around customer satisfaction and only commits to selling products she and her team have tried and tested. With many of her customers looking for gluten free, vegan options, she gave Wholesome Chow’s range a go. Have a read at what she thought of the range.

Fair warning, this post may speak strongly to your sweet tooth!

Avoiding wheat and gluten a few years ago left me feeling like I was missing out on the nice things in life. Delicious treats we all like to have every now and again like cakes, biscuits and bread.

When I’d attempt to make gluten free/wheat free alternatives, it was always a bit of a mission. Like many of my customers, making such treats meant I had to use copious amounts of ingredients and it would end up costing me more than the monthly mortgage (well, almost) especially if I wanted organic. And after all the hard work, I was never happy with the results.

This left me thinking, what about my customers? Would they give up on baking products, on cooking, on opting for healthy gluten free options? Would they be so unhappy with the lack of convenience in gluten free baking that they’d just never purchase again from my store? I never liked the thought of my customers being unsatisfied.

So I went searching for a solution.
What I found, was Wholesome Chow.

Wholesome Chow

I’d seen a lot of pictures of ‘drip cakes’, so I gave making one a go using Wholesome Chow products.

HOW TO MAKE A WHOLESOME CHOW DRIP CAKE

First, I made four, seven-inch chocolate cake mixes. I only had to add apple cider vinegar, non-dairy milk and oil to the Wholesome Chow cake mixes, it could not be any simpler (although I still managed to get my kitchen looking like a tornado had been in there)!

It literally took 10 minutes to mix the batter and then 25 minutes in the oven to bake.

While they cooled, I made the Wholesome Chow Vanilla frosting to go in-between each layer and then I used Wholesome Chow Chocolate Frosting to cover the outside and the top. All I had to add was vegan butter and milk.

I put the cake in the fridge for around 15 minutes to set.

Next, I melted some Alter Eco Dark Sea Salt with a 1/4 cup of Nakula Coconut Cream and let that drizzle over the top and down the sides of the cake and now I was getting excited!!!

I broke up some vegan honeycomb and placed it on the top and the side of
the cake.

In-between I placed The Chocolate Yogi frothy Toffee, Alter Eco quinoa and Black Out and mixed in some Rawganic coconut chocolate.

To add a little texture I sprinkled some Niulife flaked coconut and topped it off with a few organic strawberries.

I was really pleased with the result! Everybody loved it. The cake was light and fluffy, it was tasty and not artificial or dry (which is common for gluten free cakes).

This is a really special cake to make, but honestly, the mixes made it incredibly easy. It would be even easier for customers to whip up a regular cake using Wholesome Chow mixes!

Wholesome Chow have changed our world – my customers and my own!

After trying and testing it, creating a drip cake, we can now confidently recommend these amazing products to our valued customers.

Wholesome Chow make gluten free baking so easy, why wouldn’t customers
love them?!

Cracking the Coconut Market

TAKE A SIP OF ICY COLD COCONUT WATER AND DRIFT OFF TO A TROPICAL HOLIDAY. WHO DOESN’T WANT THAT?

It’s magical (or very well marketed) how coconut has the ability to evoke feelings of balance and well-being.

The versatile husk covered seed gives us oil, flour, dried flakes, sugar, cream, water… the list goes on!

It also offers a diverse flavour that suits savoury and sweet dishes. Depending on the maturity of the seed, the flavour can be described as toasted and sweet through to creamy or even fatty and fresh.

With so much to offer, it’s no surprise that coconut has grown a huge following in recent years. At first some saw it as a passing fad, but its popularity has only continued to grow and the seed’s surely not shying from the market in 2016.

Coconut has been named the flavour of 2016 by Firmenich, the world’s largest private company in the fragrance and flavour industry.

As the association between wellness and the popular seed remains strong and its versatility only grows, more consumers are transforming into coconut fanatics! To keep up with demand, the number of pure and flavoured coconut products has increased 121% since 2010, with an annual growth rate of 17%.*

The demand is not showing any signs of slowing down. Chris Brockman, senior food and drink analyst at Mintel (global market intelligence agency) says, “Coconut in general is benefiting from being ‘on-trend’ on a number of fronts, and coconut flavoured variants as a whole can be expected to continue to grow across the food and drink sector.”

The seed is holding onto its market roots with coconut water, although big brands are also expanding to offer flavoured products to target the demand.

So what does this mean for you?
2016 is the time to go nuts on coconut – that’s what!

START WITH BASICS
Now a $1 billion industry,  splash into the coconut water market with a well-recognised brand like Nakula.
Add pantry staples like coconut flour, sugar, oil and milk to help appeal to health-conscious consumers (including those with gluten and lactose intolerances).

GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT
During the last 5 years, the sports nutrition category has been one of the seeds strongest growth areas. Brands that align with this demand include CLIF Bar, who recently introduced a new coconut chocolate chip energy bar to their number one selling range and Blue Dinosaur, who continues to use the seed in their
paleo bars.

DON’T STOP AT THE NORM
Offer new coconut products as they come to light like chips, sauces (Matakana has crafted a really delicious amino sauce and Niulife has an irresistible chilli sauce) and don’t forget beauty products! This gives the consumer an exciting and unusual twist from the regular staples.
Co-market your coconut products with other companion products to help increase sales. For example, you can merchandise your coconut flour and maple syrup together and offer a pancake recipe card!

Coconut Market Blog Post 2

From pantry staples to body washes, coconut in every form has earnt its title as flavour of the year! So now we sit down and take a trip to a tropical oasis – no wait, I’m just sipping a coconut water!

Profile: Nakula Sharing the Coconut With The World

TONY LEMARSENY’S PASSION FOR SHARING THE HUMBLE COCONUT’S NUTRIENT PROPERTIES HAS BEEN THE BACKBONE THAT’S SUPPORTED NAKULA’S JOURNEY TO BECOME A FAVOURITE GLOBAL COCONUT BRAND.

It was on a surf trip to the Island of Sumba that Tony Lemarseny, a dedicated waterman and seasoned traveller, discovered the unique properties of coconut water. His son, who had fallen ill, made a speedy recovery after he was given coconut water by local villagers. Tony was determined to share the remarkable benefits with every Australian.

“I have a strong belief in the benefits of Nakula and a genuine desire to share this with Australians”,
Tony explains.

Today Nakula provides the finest selection of organic coconut products sourced from Asia’s top farms. Their range has grown from coconut water to also include coconut milk, cream and oil.

On top of their high quality range, Nakula is also recognised as a very charitable brand. They are aligned with Planet Water Foundation, donating a percentage of profits to install water stations in necessary areas over Asia. Tony also donates his time to work on the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
