BRANDS SPOTTED IN THE MEDIA!

We get it. When purchasing for your store, you want stock that is going to sell. You want the brands that people know about and are actively looking for in your store.

Nobody wants the headache of trying to move short-dated stock or having to heavily discount excess product that simply isn’t selling.

One key factor in determining what’s going to sell instore is how active and visible each brand is in the media. Brand awareness is incredibly important. If a product isn’t actively showing up in the lives of their target customers, whether that’s on social media, TV, print or otherwise, it’s going to be harder to sell.

According to The Business of Apps, the “Instagram audience is ready to act – 54% of respondents to the same survey said they bought something after seeing it on Instagram. 87% said they took some kind of action after seeing product details on Instagram.

The most commonly taken action was to search for more information, elected by 79% of survey respondents. Two-thirds of users, on the other hand, took the more direct path of visiting the brand’s app or website – at which point things are very much in the brand’s hands. 37% also said that they visited a retail store.

Consumers are actively looking for solutions to their problems and many of our brands are putting their hands up to help by investing in media and marketing efforts.

Many of these brands are award-winning, with sales driven by active Instagram accounts and consistent PR efforts. Here’s a highlight reel of what some of them have been up to lately:

VEGAN DESSERTS ARE SELLING LIKE HOTCAKES!

Convenience has long been king in Australian kitchens. But consumers are increasingly making the switch from traditional baking mixes to plant-based options. With the range of healthy baking mixes and vegan desserts in the market, it is no longer about sacrificing either health or flavour. Consumers are spoilt for choice and they have high expectations of retail shelves to deliver.

The plant-based switch

In 2019, Roy Morgan research revealed that nearly 2.5 million Australians now follow a vegetarian – or mostly vegetarian – diet. This sits on the back of a steady trend towards plant-based eating over the last decade.

The COVID-19 pandemic has only served to heighten the focus on health and quality ingredients. People are spending more time at home and in the kitchen and they want home baking options that allow them to whip up healthy treats with minimal effort.

As more and more people choose conscious diets with a focus on plant-based options, the demand for vegan desserts is going to continue to rise. Consumers are looking for flavour, convenience and quality… and healthy baking mixes tick all the boxes.

In-demand vegan desserts

At Unique Health Products we are ahead of the vegan desserts trend with many of our brands offering all natural baking mixes and quick to make desserts that are vegan-friendly but also high in on-trend, plant-based protein! Here is just a taste:

NATURAL EVOLUTION SEEN ON TV!

Between them, the girls behind Keep It Cleaner, Stephanie Claire Smith and Laura Henshaw, have almost 2 million Instagram followers. They share their passion for clean living with a focus on fitness, nutrition and wellness.

These girls know their stuff when it comes to healthy products. And that’s why we were thrilled to see Natural Evolution’s Green Banana Flour featured on the first episode of their new TV show, The Healthy Cooks.

Meet Natural Evolution

Natural Evolution is a business built on innovation. They are responsible for the world’s first – and only – banana peeling machine and the “banana blankey”, a fully recyclable packaging for protecting bananas during transport.

But it’s their green banana products – including the Green Banana Baking Flour – that really takes innovation to the next level.

Green Banana Flour is gluten free, high fibre and nutrient-packed. Made from the green cavendish bananas that the supermarkets deem too bendy, too straight, too big or too small, green banana flour is high in resistant starch which is great for gut health!

“Try swapping wheat flour for a gluten free alternative like banana flour which is packed with prebiotic fibre,” explained Laura Henshaw on The Healthy Cooks. “It’s so good for our gut health. It’s one small change you can make for your health and wellbeing.”

Cooking with Green Banana Flour

On The Healthy Cooks, Stephanie and Laura made a delicious Haloumi, Roasted Pumpkin and Spinach Frittata

Green banana flour is versatile to cook with – the flour rises beautifully when baking and results in light and fluffy baked goods with a delicious flavour. As with any gluten-free baking, only ½ – ¾ of green banana flour is required for every cup of regular flour indicated in a recipe.

Haloumi, Roasted Pumpkin and Spinach Frittata

Due to its resistant starch, ease to cook with and gut health benefits, Green Banana Flour is a trending product on the rise. To place a wholesale order you can shop online 24/7, or call our friendly sales team on 1800 787 904. If you’re new to Unique Health Products, you can register for a wholesale account here.

What are Aussies eating right now? (And how to stock your shelves!)

According to Neilsen Homescan research, in the four weeks ending 22 March 2020, the volume sales for long-life meals, bread mix, rice, flour and pasta have more than doubled!

These numbers mean the average Australian pantry is stocked with enough of these items to last two to three months. But they’re continuing to buy!

“Our recent analysis highlights some clear themes in consumer behaviour we can expect to see over the next few months,” says Managing Director of Nielsen Connect, Bernie Hughes.

“More time at home will give rise to more cooking and baking from scratch as consumers find creative ways to use up their pantry staples; but an increase in sales for convenient meal options also cater to smaller person households or those that are juggling the various demands of working from home and homeschooling.”

HOW TO PREP YOUR SHELVES FOR CHANGING CONSUMER DEMAND:

The Post-Carb Loading Diet Craze

The average Australian household has enough rice to see them through 65 days, pasta to last 63 days and enough noodles to last 55 days.

Due to the heavy carb storing, Mr Hughes predicts that, “Brands that focus on health and fitness in the future are likely to see strong demand from consumers who see a renewed sense of importance in staying healthy.”

Have these low carb and keto-friendly options on standby:

  • Herocup Keto Peanut Butter Cup
  • Lakanto Monkfruit and Erythritol Sweetener
  • PBCo Low Carb Crumbs & Lower Carb Rice
  • Slim Secrets Bare Bar
  • Botanika Blends Protein Powders
  • Macro Mike Brownie Mix
  • The Monday Food Co Keto Cake Mix
  • Vitawerx Keto Mayo

Creativity SpikeS

Australian households are likely to make more of an effort to cook from scratch and attempt to make meals outside of their usual repertoire.

Nielsen Digital Content Ratings data shows that on the last weekend of March, Australians spent 71% more time online with food and cooking content when compared to the last weekend of February.

“We anticipate that shoppers will begin to think more creatively about how they cook over the next few weeks,” explains Mr Hughes.

Let your customers get creative with these easy additions to new and exciting dishes:

  • Essential Hemp Hemp Seeds
  • Nuilife Coconut Sugar
  • Nutritionist Choice Sushi Nori
  • Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Dandies Mini Vanilla Marshmallows
  • Natural Evolution Dough Mix
  • Organic Times Choc Drops

Convenience continues

Since many families are juggling the challenges of working from home and looking after children – shoppers have also stocked up on quick-and-easy meal solutions, including prepared meals, canned vegetables, canned soup, pasta and sauce.

Instant, effortless or really easy. These products tick the boxes for healthy convenience:

  • Difatti Gnocchi
  • Plantasy Foods Mac n Cheez
  • Upbeat Instant Meals
  • Plantasy Foods Gravy Mix
  • Turban Chopsticks
  • Spice Girlz

SPRING CLEANING IN AUTUMN

Toilet paper and hand sanitiser are still very hard to come by in-store and online. However, Australian shoppers are also stockpiling other household products including general cleaners, disinfectants and dishwashing detergent.

Disinfectant sales are up 102% on a year-over-year basis.

Try these popular, natural brands:

  • Planet Luxe
  • Koala Eco
  • Kin Kin
  • Bon Ami
  • Euco Clean

“Consumer habits tend to change over time, but the COVID-19 outbreak is forcing Australian consumers to reconfigure their lives, their habits and their spending patterns at a speed and scale we have never seen.

“With households now in lockdown and experiencing what it means to have restricted movement, limited access to physical stores and expanded reliance on digital connectivity, it is important to continue to monitor these trends as we adjust to a new normal,” concludes Mr Hughes.

NATURALLY GOOD EXPO 2018 – BY THE NUMBERS

Held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Darling Harbour, the Naturally Good Expo is Australia’s largest trade show for all natural, organic and healthy products and services.

Each year we attend as a platinum partner to showcase our top sellers to the most influential people in the industry and work to build mutually beneficial connections with retailers and our suppliers. This year we unveiled our biggest stand yet – the largest at the show!

In case you missed it, here’s how our Naturally Good Expo 2018 experience happened – by the numbers!

Naturally-good-expo-2018-clif-bar1

1. ONE CRITICAL PERSON

It takes a whole lot of planning, coordination and project management to transform our original ideas into a real-life masterpiece at the Naturally Good Expo. Thankfully, we have one incredible team that makes all the late nights, early mornings, last minute hiccups and hours spent on emails and phone calls integrate into a seamless, successful event!

While we couldn’t do it without many hands on deck, there is always one person in particular that plays a pivotal role in our Naturally Good experience – our Marketing Executive extraordinaire, Carol. Thank you for all that you do!

2. TWO MAJOR STALL SPACES

This year the Unique stand took up two of the largest sites at the expo. The updated stand was dotted with sampling booths, decorated with hot new products and buzzing with staff, suppliers and retailers – it was a sight to see and the energy was incredible!

3. THREE HOUR PACK DOWN

With the Australian Pharmacy Professional Conference & Trade Exhibition looming the following weekend, most of the team had already returned to the Sunshine Coast by the time the event ended. The staff and suppliers that remained (thank you, East Bali Cashews and Natural Evolution!) packed down the stall in a record time of 3 hours!

4. FOUR SIGMATIC, MY MAGIC MUD, UPTON’S NATURALS & MORE!

This year, when it came to sampling and showcasing our amazing product range, the team had a little extra help…

Award-winning international and local creators, innovators and makers of the hottest, must-have health products joined us as part of our ‘Meet the Makers’ event – including Four Sigmatic, My Magic Mud, Manitoba Harvest and Upton’s Naturals!

Each supplier that joined our stand had the opportunity to promote and sample their products at their very own sampling booth. This allowed the suppliers to strengthen their retailer relationships and cement their place as a leading brand in the health and wellness space. Something we’re beyond proud to help facilitate!

5. FIVE HUNDRED HEALTH PRODUCTS AND GOODIE BAGS

The stand was full to the brim with more than 500 natural health and wellness products on display! Plus, we handed out 500+ goodie bags to industry influencers, retail leaders, and key stakeholders filled with:

6. SIX MONTHS PREP TIME

The entire event took our team, Carol in particular, a grand total of six months to prepare for. From supporting the Naturally Good Expo team with our Platinum Partner duties, to coordinating stock, and logistics of the stand set up and staff involved, there was so much to be done and we couldn’t be prouder of our team and what they’ve achieved!

7. SEVEN THOUSAND ATTENDEES

Across two huge days, we served up thousands of product samples to 7000+ health-focused expo attendees – also known as a lot of chopping!

Sampling allowed retailers and industry leaders to gain better insights into the suppliers products, build stronger connections, learn the backstory, and discover what niche the product can fill in their stores. It’s a super important step towards long-term success in stores!

Naturally-good-expo-2018-manitoba-harvest

8. MORE THAN EIGHTY HOT NEW PRODUCTS LAUNCHED

An entire section of our stand was dedicated to over 80 hot new products launched at the expo! Brands included:

9. NINE HOUR SET UP

While the pack down was somewhat of a breeze, Rome wasn’t certainly not built overnight. Our largest stand ever took a whole lot of teamwork and around nine hours to set it all up!

10. TEN HUGE PALLETS DELIVERED

That nine hours of set up involved the unpacking and merchandising of 10 full pallets of product, equipment and stall materials!

Despite the whirlwind nature of the actual event, we put our time and effort into these events to support our suppliers, build and strengthen our retailer relationships and meet new faces along the way. We couldn’t do what we do without their support and for that, we’re always grateful!

If you missed out this time, don’t worry, we can’t wait to do it all again, so we’ll see you next year!

375g raisins, roughly chopped
375g sultanas
250g currants
200g dried apricots, roughly chopped
150g pitted prunes, roughly chopped

½ cup ‘fruits of the forest jam’ (any dark berry jam will work)

1 tbs ground nutmeg
1 tbs mixed spice
4 eggs, at room temperature

4 tbs coconut oil
1 cup soft brown sugar
1 1/4 cups of Natural Evolution Ultimate Gluten Free Baking Flour (green banana flour)
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda

METHOD

7. Lay paper over foil. Make a 3 cm pleat in the middle. Place, paper-side down, over pudding. Secure with string or use pudding lid to lock down.

11. Keep checking water level because the water can evaporate and may need to be topped up.
12. Simmer for 5 hours or take off lid and check with a skewer. Take care as it will be very hot.
13. Remove pudding from water. Stand for 30 minutes. Turn onto a platter. Serve as desired. Alternatively, cool completely then store.
