The art of self-care has been around for centuries. While the methods may have changed and broadened over the years, the goal of each practice has remained the same – calm the nervous system, feel good and nurture health and wellbeing.

So many self-care practices that were once considered ‘alternative’ have now infiltrated our daily lives and are widely accepted i.e. yoga and meditation.

88% of consumers actively practice some form of self-care.

But thanks to social media and the internet, the self-care industry is a vast space, wide open for individual interpretation and implementation. Even a person’s morning coffee ritual can be considered a form of self-care.

There are more than 25 million posts on Instagram tagged with #selfcare!

Whether it’s a face mask, meditation, breathing technique, home fragrance, diet plan, tea break, bedtime routine or skincare ritual. There’s an option to suit everybody and it’s a retail opportunity, which according to IRi reports, that’s worth a whopping $450 billion!

MEN’S SELF CARE: Self-care is not only for women either! Allied Market Research projects that the global market for men’s personal care will reach $166 billion by 2022. Skin and body care, in particular, are becoming more socially acceptable thanks to admired celebrities sharing their own routines and innovative marketing campaigns creating discussion.

In order to harness maximum sales growth, brands and retailers must think outside of the traditional, narrowly defined category and take a far broader approach. Taking the time to understand how each retail category can fit within this benefit-based, solution-oriented space is a strategic move that has the potential to totally transform your sales performance.

Today’s busy lifestyles, over-ambitious to-do lists, and constant push to spread ourselves far too thin has us struggling to take a moment to stop.

As a result, convenience foods continue to take over the retail shelves and consumers can’t get enough.

But regular snack foods no longer cut it.

Consumers are demanding more nutritious options, more functional health benefits, and more snacks that suit their dietary preferences. They’re expecting far more than just something to tide them over until dinner time.

So what has consumers coming back for more? A little category we’re calling “Goodness on-the-go”. This includes health-focused snacks, wholesome mini meals and hydration that are designed for quick and easy consumption and pack a tonne of goodness into every mouthful.

These six trends fit smack bang in this category and are well and truly integrating into our daily lives. Have you got these hot sellers on your shelves?

Right on target with goodness-on-the-go, nutrient-rich juice shots provide a natural boost of nutrition in quick grab n’ go bottles. Popular in fresh juice bars and wellness cafes, these pint-sized drinks pack a punch when it comes to nutrition and caters to the demand for more functional food.

The Ginger People have Ginger Shots which are 30% ginger juice combined with creamy coconut. They’re available in Wild Turmeric with anti-inflammatory turmeric and black pepper (for better absorption), or Lemon & Cayenne for a fiery boost to the metabolism. The 60ml glass bottles are tucked neatly into a shelf-ready CDU and retail at only $4.95.

High-protein snacks have been a hit with health enthusiasts for years but the innovation in this space is really ramping up! You can find protein packed into all kinds of snacks including chips, chocolate, ice cream, yoghurts, spreads and of course, the OG of convenient protein snacks, the protein bar!

Far from a brick that will break your teeth these days, the original gym-junkie protein bars have been reincarnated with numerous makeovers, ingredient overhauls and formulations. Plant-based protein bars and those with minimal ingredients are captivating a much wider market and come as a fresh alternative to whey protein based bars.

RXBARs are protein bars made with a few simple ingredients that are perfect for breakfast on the go, as protein-packed snack bars, or as a pre/post-workout fuel. They use egg whites for protein, dates to bind and nuts for texture.

Each delicious bar packs 12g of protein and 5g of fibre in just under 220 calories and is a combination of only 8 ingredients or less! They are available in six tempting flavours and have an enticing RRP of only $3.95!

Peanuts are going beyond the much-loved peanut butter spread and are appearing in everything from baked goods, protein powders and snack bars. According to Mintel research, the fastest growing peanut ingredients in new products include peanut flour, peanut butter and peanut flavour.

Peanuts offer the perfect trifecta for taste, texture and nutrition, offering protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals to keep hunger pangs at bay. They appeal to plant-based foodies and bump up the protein for a clean, wholesome ingredient list that customers love.

It doesn’t get much more dedicated to peanuts than Macro Mike. They have a range of Protein Powders, just-add-water Cookie and Brownie Baking Mixes, Powdered Peanut Butters, and Protein Bars that hero the humble peanut!

Macro Mike impressively combines the need for convenience and the demand for high-protein without compromising on taste in the slightest. The entire range is vegan and retails from $4.50 to $69.95.

A Neilsen study revealed 45% of global respondents consume snacks as a meal alternative – 52% for breakfast, 43% for lunch and 40% for dinner. Thanks to our busy schedules, this snackification movement is rapidly becoming the norm with “heat and eat”, “just-add-water”, and “ready in minutes” product claims sounding like music to your customer’s ears!

The truth is, snacks are no longer filling gaps between more wholesome meals. They are the replacement for those meals.

When you can offer your customers a mini meal that requires very little time and effort, has a great taste and a wholesome ingredient list – then you’re onto a winner!

Upbeat packs a tonne of plant-based protein into a convenient range of grab n’ go porridge and meals. Suitable for breakfast, lunch and dinner, they contain 20-25g of protein per serve, include gluten-free and vegan options, are low in sugar and ready in five minutes!

They’re a health-conscious, quick fix meal solution with an awesome RRP of only $4.60-$5.70!

The porridge flavours include Blueberry Coconut, Chai Spiced Apricot & Buckwheat, Chocolate and Three Grain Raspberry. The savoury selection includes Creamy Mushroom Buckwheat, Thai Curry Lentils and Coconut Curried Lentils.

According to Nielsen data, packaged cauliflower products have grown by 71% over the past year. Experts are attributing the rise in cauli-love to a broader increased interest in low carb, keto and paleo diets. As well as an increased awareness about the health benefits of vegetables and desire to eat more of them. Especially those following flexitarian, vegan, gluten-free and plant-based diets.

Keto Naturals have a range of Crispy Cauli Bites that are keto and paleo friendly, gluten free and vegan. They’re non-GMO, have 5g net carbs and come in 8-pack, shelf-ready CDUs and flavours include:

  • Barbecue
  • Garlic & Herb
  • Sea Salted

Each pack contains a full head of cauliflower and is slow cooked using a simple list of clean ingredients without any fillers or artificial flavours. They RRP for only $4.95!

Single-use plastic water bottles are getting the flick with an influx of stylish, reusable alternatives taking their place.

Now used as a fashion accessory, hydrating in an environmentally friendly way is right on trend. The rise of the ‘VSCO girl’ has seen Hydro Flask bottles become a teenage girls’ statement drinking piece, while celebrities and the like are forking out $8,500 for a designer Chanel reusable bottle, because they can.

Healthier hydration is yet another way consumers can showcase their status and highlight their environmentally-friendly stance to the world. And it’s a fashion item that’s not going out of style any time soon. The global reusable water bottles market is expected to be valued at AUD$17.9 billion by 2029!

Hydro Flask insulated bottles are for life’s exciting moments. All while fighting the war on waste and looking great doing so.

They redefine the hydration experience excelling in temperature control with TempShield™ technology. As well as taste management with 18/8 pro-grade stainless steel that protects against flavour transfer. Plus, they have a slip-free, durable grip thanks to the proprietary powder coat. Hydro Flask deliver unexpected refreshment each and every time. Their double-insulated bottles RRP from $46.95.

Juicing has been huge in the wellness world for years. Purported to cleanse, detox and help reduce inflammation in the body. Juicing has often been seen as a quick way to boost your health.

Today, the demand for food to offer more specific functional benefits paired with our busy on-the-go lifestyles is driving innovation in this space. Consumers not only want health-promoting snacks and drinks, but they want them quickly and easily.

Right on target with this trend, nutrient-rich juice shots provide a natural boost of nutrition in quick grab n’ go bottles.

According to Mintel data, the share of juice shots in total juice launches in Europe has increased sixfold over the past four years.

“These tiny juice shots promise to deliver a quick dose of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals in tasty liquid form. Many of the shots have the new “superfood”, turmeric in them. This relative of ginger has been used for hundreds of years in India, both for flavouring and medicinal purposes and is credited with easing headaches, joint pain, menstrual cramps and boosting the metabolism.”

Functional juice shots were seen everywhere at the world’s largest natural, organic and healthy products event, Expo West, this month!

Made with pure, concentrated doses of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and other ingredients, juice shots are promoted as a preventative measure to boost consumers’ overall wellbeing or as a quick way to address specific health issues.

Most commonly, the blends are designed to help boost energy levels, support the immune system, aid digestive health, and help relieve cold and flu symptoms.

Ginger has by far been the leading ingredient when it comes to juice shot innovation. It’s often combined with lemon juice and dubbed as a ‘wonder plant’ for it’s reported benefits in relieving pain and muscle soreness, immune support and lowering blood pressure.

Actress Selena Gomez swears by her daily ginger shot every morning!

So how can you make the most of this craze, even if you don’t have cold storage?

The Ginger People have launched their innovative Ginger Shot with Wild Turmeric in a 60ml shelf-stable bottle. Packed with goodness and tucked neatly into an attractive self-ready CDU, these little gems retail at $4.95 and are loaded with grab n’ go goodness!Ginger Shot with ginger_500x500px

These nutritious shots are appearing in various places in stores, including on shelf next to full-sized grab-and-go juices, in the produce aisle, and in pharmacies either at the counter or as part of a larger natural health and wellness display. Place them front and centre for an enticing upsell that appeals to a wide range of consumers.

Held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Darling Harbour, the Naturally Good Expo is Australia’s largest trade show for all natural, organic and healthy products and services.

Each year we attend as a platinum partner to showcase our top sellers to the most influential people in the industry and work to build mutually beneficial connections with retailers and our suppliers. This year we unveiled our biggest stand yet – the largest at the show!

In case you missed it, here’s how our Naturally Good Expo 2018 experience happened – by the numbers!

It takes a whole lot of planning, coordination and project management to transform our original ideas into a real-life masterpiece at the Naturally Good Expo. Thankfully, we have one incredible team that makes all the late nights, early mornings, last minute hiccups and hours spent on emails and phone calls integrate into a seamless, successful event!

While we couldn’t do it without many hands on deck, there is always one person in particular that plays a pivotal role in our Naturally Good experience – our Marketing Executive extraordinaire, Carol. Thank you for all that you do!

This year the Unique stand took up two of the largest sites at the expo. The updated stand was dotted with sampling booths, decorated with hot new products and buzzing with staff, suppliers and retailers – it was a sight to see and the energy was incredible!

With the Australian Pharmacy Professional Conference & Trade Exhibition looming the following weekend, most of the team had already returned to the Sunshine Coast by the time the event ended. The staff and suppliers that remained (thank you, East Bali Cashews and Natural Evolution!) packed down the stall in a record time of 3 hours!

This year, when it came to sampling and showcasing our amazing product range, the team had a little extra help…

Award-winning international and local creators, innovators and makers of the hottest, must-have health products joined us as part of our ‘Meet the Makers’ event – including Four Sigmatic, My Magic Mud, Manitoba Harvest and Upton’s Naturals!

Each supplier that joined our stand had the opportunity to promote and sample their products at their very own sampling booth. This allowed the suppliers to strengthen their retailer relationships and cement their place as a leading brand in the health and wellness space. Something we’re beyond proud to help facilitate!

The stand was full to the brim with more than 500 natural health and wellness products on display! Plus, we handed out 500+ goodie bags to industry influencers, retail leaders, and key stakeholders filled with:

The entire event took our team, Carol in particular, a grand total of six months to prepare for. From supporting the Naturally Good Expo team with our Platinum Partner duties, to coordinating stock, and logistics of the stand set up and staff involved, there was so much to be done and we couldn’t be prouder of our team and what they’ve achieved!

Across two huge days, we served up thousands of product samples to 7000+ health-focused expo attendees – also known as a lot of chopping!

Sampling allowed retailers and industry leaders to gain better insights into the suppliers products, build stronger connections, learn the backstory, and discover what niche the product can fill in their stores. It’s a super important step towards long-term success in stores!

An entire section of our stand was dedicated to over 80 hot new products launched at the expo! Brands included:

While the pack down was somewhat of a breeze, Rome wasn’t certainly not built overnight. Our largest stand ever took a whole lot of teamwork and around nine hours to set it all up!

That nine hours of set up involved the unpacking and merchandising of 10 full pallets of product, equipment and stall materials!

Despite the whirlwind nature of the actual event, we put our time and effort into these events to support our suppliers, build and strengthen our retailer relationships and meet new faces along the way. We couldn’t do what we do without their support and for that, we’re always grateful!

If you missed out this time, don’t worry, we can’t wait to do it all again, so we’ll see you next year!

The World Of The Ginger People

Surprisingly, it wasn’t ginger where the story began, but nuts.

Back in 1984, Bruce and Abbie Leeson were both working in the nut business when Bruce was approached to introduce candied ginger to the United States. Many Americans at that time had never even tried ginger, but he saw potential in the versatile root.

What began as a side project, very quickly picked up momentum. With the introduction of The Ginger People’s iconic cartoon ginger root character (conceptualised by Abbie) the brand has continued to rapidly grow into an international best-seller.

Ginger’s vibrant flavour, purity, versatility and healthful properties are what Bruce and Abbie believe have been driving strong consumer demand and will continue to do so.

Herbalists have used ginger for thousands of years to:

– Restore vital energy
– Stimulate circulation
– Relieve countless illnesses
– Ease nausea, headaches and arthritis

Over the years, their commitment and addiction to ginger has only deepened.

“We use ginger every day, in our morning granola,
in our cooking, even on our sore muscles
after a long run.” Bruce explains.

The family owned and operated business now offers over 80 good-for-you treats and functional ingredients and is available all over the world.

One of their current goals is to push the brand to over 50 export markets, proving they’ve got no plans of slowing down.

Manufacturing all-natural and organic products using only the highest quality ginger and crafting the most innovative ginger products, The Ginger People has grown to be the world’s most award-winning ginger brand.

Their range currently available in Australia (and now exclusively distributed by Unique) includes beverages, nourishing treats, functional ingredients and crystallised ginger, which are all gluten and wheat free.

Being very particular about quality, Bruce and Abbie have travelled to spectacular locations in search of the best ginger available.

“We source ginger where it grows best,
which means we have visited some
of the most breath-taking places
in the world.” Bruce explains.

A remote mountain region in Fujian province of China (the birthplace of ginger), the interior Amazon in Peru, small family farms in Fiji and ginger fields on the base of Mt. Arjuna on the island of Java in Indonesia are among the locations where The Ginger People’s ginger root is sourced.

Inia Seruratu - The Ginger People Blog

The Ginger People source ginger from a stunning Fiji farm owned by Fiji’s Minister of Agriculture, Inia Seruratu – pictured above.

His small farm is located in Verata, Tailevu Province. Inia planted 1-1/2 acres last season and he plans to expand to 4-5 acres this coming season. With his large commitment to government duties, Inia’s brother looks after the small family farm on his behalf.

Except for keeping some “mother” ginger for the next planting cycle, Inia will sell his crop to the ginger factory to make products for The Ginger People.

Bruce and Abbie say that people, focus and quality are what sets them apart from other brands.

Their staff are all passionate and driven by ginger’s potential. What makes them such an incredible business is their commitment and drive to grow, but not at the expense of their farmers.

They’ve always been proud to offer increased opportunities to farmers and small villages with revenue sharing programs and are also renowned in the industry for their fair-trade work practices.

At the centre of this rapidly growing international business, they always maintain the singular focus of creating world-class ginger products that consumers love.

Give Gluten-Free Customers a Grinch-Free Holiday Season

Most would be able to recall an ‘oh, I can’t… I don’t eat gluten’ comment. Yes?

It’s not that these potential customers don’t want a slice of delicious cake, a crunchy cracker or a melt-in-the-mouth biscuit – trust me they want it as much as anybody! This is why year-after-year we see the gluten-free industry in a state of exponential growth. Not just in monetary value or demand but also in variety.

There are almost endless options available now for customers who are avoiding or are sensitive to gluten. There’s cakes, crackers, biscuits, breads, sauces, dressings, DIY bake mixes… the list goes on. We’ve also got our hands on some gluten-free Christmas recipes that your customers will brag about, but we’ll get to those.

First let’s talk about gluten, or in this case the absence of it.

According to a recent report from Transparency Market Research, the global gluten-free food market was valued at US$2.84 billion in 2014 and is projected to reach US$4.89 billion by 2021, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 7.7% from 2015 to 2021.

Gluten-free is surely on the rise, with those not only sensitive to gluten opting for such options but also health conscious consumers following the same path.

A study from Monash University revealed that 78% of those who purchase gluten-free products say they do so for some sort of health reason.

It also identified that younger generations are the majority responsible for the industries growth. 38% of Generation Z and 32% of millennials said they are willing to pay more for gluten-free products.

These types of consumers are a lot more loyal than your bargain hunting customers and tend to be influenced mostly by quality and customer service.

So what to do now? Don’t hide from all those consumers seeking convenient, gluten-free options over the silly season. Show them the stock and enlighten them with all the potential holiday treats they may have missed before gluten-free popularity boomed.

Snacks are among the top gluten-free foods these consumers demand, so stock up on some favourites that still have the holiday feel like Dr Superfoods Super Cherries, Chimes Toasted Coconut Toffee and The Ginger People Crystallised Ginger.

With the healthy convenience trend still shaping up strong, it’s also a good idea to stock up on brands like Monica’s Mixes Baking Mixes and offer recipes that suit the season. We’ve added a couple delicious favourites from Monica Topliss below for you to share.
