NATURALLY GOOD EXPO 2018 – BY THE NUMBERS

Held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Darling Harbour, the Naturally Good Expo is Australia’s largest trade show for all natural, organic and healthy products and services.

Each year we attend as a platinum partner to showcase our top sellers to the most influential people in the industry and work to build mutually beneficial connections with retailers and our suppliers. This year we unveiled our biggest stand yet – the largest at the show!

In case you missed it, here’s how our Naturally Good Expo 2018 experience happened – by the numbers!

1. ONE CRITICAL PERSON

It takes a whole lot of planning, coordination and project management to transform our original ideas into a real-life masterpiece at the Naturally Good Expo. Thankfully, we have one incredible team that makes all the late nights, early mornings, last minute hiccups and hours spent on emails and phone calls integrate into a seamless, successful event!

While we couldn’t do it without many hands on deck, there is always one person in particular that plays a pivotal role in our Naturally Good experience – our Marketing Executive extraordinaire, Carol. Thank you for all that you do!

2. TWO MAJOR STALL SPACES

This year the Unique stand took up two of the largest sites at the expo. The updated stand was dotted with sampling booths, decorated with hot new products and buzzing with staff, suppliers and retailers – it was a sight to see and the energy was incredible!

3. THREE HOUR PACK DOWN

With the Australian Pharmacy Professional Conference & Trade Exhibition looming the following weekend, most of the team had already returned to the Sunshine Coast by the time the event ended. The staff and suppliers that remained (thank you, East Bali Cashews and Natural Evolution!) packed down the stall in a record time of 3 hours!

4. FOUR SIGMATIC, MY MAGIC MUD, UPTON’S NATURALS & MORE!

This year, when it came to sampling and showcasing our amazing product range, the team had a little extra help…

Award-winning international and local creators, innovators and makers of the hottest, must-have health products joined us as part of our ‘Meet the Makers’ event – including Four Sigmatic, My Magic Mud, Manitoba Harvest and Upton’s Naturals!

Each supplier that joined our stand had the opportunity to promote and sample their products at their very own sampling booth. This allowed the suppliers to strengthen their retailer relationships and cement their place as a leading brand in the health and wellness space. Something we’re beyond proud to help facilitate!

5. FIVE HUNDRED HEALTH PRODUCTS AND GOODIE BAGS

The stand was full to the brim with more than 500 natural health and wellness products on display! Plus, we handed out 500+ goodie bags to industry influencers, retail leaders, and key stakeholders filled with:

6. SIX MONTHS PREP TIME

The entire event took our team, Carol in particular, a grand total of six months to prepare for. From supporting the Naturally Good Expo team with our Platinum Partner duties, to coordinating stock, and logistics of the stand set up and staff involved, there was so much to be done and we couldn’t be prouder of our team and what they’ve achieved!

7. SEVEN THOUSAND ATTENDEES

Across two huge days, we served up thousands of product samples to 7000+ health-focused expo attendees – also known as a lot of chopping!

Sampling allowed retailers and industry leaders to gain better insights into the suppliers products, build stronger connections, learn the backstory, and discover what niche the product can fill in their stores. It’s a super important step towards long-term success in stores!

8. MORE THAN EIGHTY HOT NEW PRODUCTS LAUNCHED

An entire section of our stand was dedicated to over 80 hot new products launched at the expo! Brands included:

9. NINE HOUR SET UP

While the pack down was somewhat of a breeze, Rome wasn’t certainly not built overnight. Our largest stand ever took a whole lot of teamwork and around nine hours to set it all up!

10. TEN HUGE PALLETS DELIVERED

That nine hours of set up involved the unpacking and merchandising of 10 full pallets of product, equipment and stall materials!

Despite the whirlwind nature of the actual event, we put our time and effort into these events to support our suppliers, build and strengthen our retailer relationships and meet new faces along the way. We couldn’t do what we do without their support and for that, we’re always grateful!

Naturally Good Expo 2017 Proves a Knock Out

KNOWN FOR BRINGING TOGETHER RETAILERS, DISTRIBUTORS, BRAND OWNERS AND NATURAL HEALTH INDUSTRY EXPERTS, THE NATURALLY GOOD EXPO 2017 DID NOT DISAPPOINT!

This year Unique went bigger and better, bringing hundreds of brands and thousands of products to display. The team also offered hours of tastings and sampling, countless amounts of generous goodies bags and Dale (UHP Managing Director) and the team shared the wealth of knowledge gained from being in the industry for over three decades.

For those who were amongst the 6,322 who attended The Naturally Good Expo in Sydney, it was fantastic to meet you and discuss our industry trends and what’s new!

As the biggest trade show in the Southern Hemisphere for everything healthy we were thrilled to be surrounded by like-minded professionals.

For those who unfortunately were unable to make it this year, we’ll catch you up on what you missed.

Every year we aim to bring Unique’s diversified, fun culture, expert customer service and strong business ethics to the expo. For those of you that have toured our Sunshine Coast headquarters, you’d know it’s not an easy task!

With over 300 exhibitors, it was one busy environment. We designed our stand specifically to create a space that was easy for our visitors to see, touch, taste and interact with our company and the brands we represent. From the green foliage to the clear signage, the space was designed to help our visitors find exactly what was needed while also understanding our natural origins and what we stand for.

We had every category covered: active nutrition, grab n’ go, healthy snacks and drinks, superfoods, natural remedies, pantry and body + hair care.

The World Of The Ginger People

IT’S A 30-YEAR TALE AND A GOOD ROOT (GINGER, OF COURSE) THAT’S GIVEN THE WORLD THE MUCH LOVED BRAND THE GINGER PEOPLE.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t ginger where the story began, but nuts.

Back in 1984, Bruce and Abbie Leeson were both working in the nut business when Bruce was approached to introduce candied ginger to the United States. Many Americans at that time had never even tried ginger, but he saw potential in the versatile root.

What began as a side project, very quickly picked up momentum. With the introduction of The Ginger People’s iconic cartoon ginger root character (conceptualised by Abbie) the brand has continued to rapidly grow into an international best-seller.

Ginger’s vibrant flavour, purity, versatility and healthful properties are what Bruce and Abbie believe have been driving strong consumer demand and will continue to do so.

Inia Seruratu - The Ginger People Blog

The Ginger People source ginger from a stunning Fiji farm owned by Fiji’s Minister of Agriculture, Inia Seruratu – pictured above.

His small farm is located in Verata, Tailevu Province. Inia planted 1-1/2 acres last season and he plans to expand to 4-5 acres this coming season. With his large commitment to government duties, Inia’s brother looks after the small family farm on his behalf.

Except for keeping some “mother” ginger for the next planting cycle, Inia will sell his crop to the ginger factory to make products for The Ginger People.

Bruce and Abbie say that people, focus and quality are what sets them apart from other brands.

Give Gluten-Free Customers a Grinch-Free Holiday Season

FOR YOUR GLUTEN-FREE CUSTOMERS, GUARANTEEING A TASTY DELIGHT WITHOUT BEING THE ONE THAT BRINGS IT OR MAKES IT IS OFTEN QUITE UNLIKELY. THIS IS TRUE ON ANY OCCASION, LET ALONE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON.

Most would be able to recall an ‘oh, I can’t… I don’t eat gluten’ comment. Yes?

It’s not that these potential customers don’t want a slice of delicious cake, a crunchy cracker or a melt-in-the-mouth biscuit – trust me they want it as much as anybody! This is why year-after-year we see the gluten-free industry in a state of exponential growth. Not just in monetary value or demand but also in variety.

There are almost endless options available now for customers who are avoiding or are sensitive to gluten. There’s cakes, crackers, biscuits, breads, sauces, dressings, DIY bake mixes… the list goes on. We’ve also got our hands on some gluten-free Christmas recipes that your customers will brag about, but we’ll get to those.

First let’s talk about gluten, or in this case the absence of it.

According to a recent report from Transparency Market Research, the global gluten-free food market was valued at US$2.84 billion in 2014 and is projected to reach US$4.89 billion by 2021, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 7.7% from 2015 to 2021.

Gluten-free is surely on the rise, with those not only sensitive to gluten opting for such options but also health conscious consumers following the same path.

A study from Monash University revealed that 78% of those who purchase gluten-free products say they do so for some sort of health reason.

It also identified that younger generations are the majority responsible for the industries growth. 38% of Generation Z and 32% of millennials said they are willing to pay more for gluten-free products.

These types of consumers are a lot more loyal than your bargain hunting customers and tend to be influenced mostly by quality and customer service.

So what to do now? Don’t hide from all those consumers seeking convenient, gluten-free options over the silly season. Show them the stock and enlighten them with all the potential holiday treats they may have missed before gluten-free popularity boomed.

Snacks are among the top gluten-free foods these consumers demand, so stock up on some favourites that still have the holiday feel like Dr Superfoods Super Cherries, Chimes Toasted Coconut Toffee and The Ginger People Crystallised Ginger.

With the healthy convenience trend still shaping up strong, it’s also a good idea to stock up on brands like Monica’s Mixes Baking Mixes and offer recipes that suit the season. We’ve added a couple delicious favourites from Monica Topliss below for you to share.

 

GLUTEN FREE FRUIT MINCE TARTS

INGREDIENTS

FRUIT MINCE
50g each sultanas, inca berries, currants, mixed peel
50g each dried figs and glace cherries, chopped
1cm piece fresh ginger, finely grated
25g each almonds and pecans, chopped (optional)
200g rapadura or coconut sugar
½ tsp mixed spice
3 tbls orange juice
2 tbls cold grated coconut oil
Zest of 1 lemon
1 small unpeeled cooking apple, grated

PASTRY
130g frozen grated coconut oil
240g Monica’s Gluten Free Flour Mix
50g sugar
¼ tsp salt
1 egg
110ml ice cold water

 

METHOD

FRUIT MINCE
1. Mix together.
2. Best if you allow mixture to sit for up to 7 days.

PASTRY
1. Place coconut oil in freezer until hard.
2. Then grate and return to freezer until you are ready to begin the pastry.
3. Place the frozen grated coconut in a bowl with the flour, sugar and salt.
4. Using a fork, give the mixture a quick stir. Avoid overheating the mixture as you want the shreds of frozen coconut oil to remain very cold.
5. Add the egg and water, and using your fork, mix well. Lastly using your hands, bring the dough together to form a ball.
6. Roll out the dough and cut 6 x 10cm pieces with a round cookie cutter.
7. Place the circles into bases of a muffin tin and blind bake for 10mins at 180oC.
8. Roll out the scraps of dough and cut small stars or hearts to top the tarts.
9. Fill with fruit mince, top with star or hearts and brush tarts with egg wash. Bake for 15 minutes.
10. Enjoy!
TIP! Bottle what fruit mince is left and use throughout the festive season…mix through vanilla ice-cream and make a lovely frozen pudding!

 

MONICA’S MIXES CHRISTMAS FRUIT CAKE

INGREDIENTS
200g mixed dried fruit of choice
75 ml fresh orange juice
1 tablespoon orange zest
2 tablespoons goji berries
1 x packet Monica’s Mixes Banana Bread Mix
½ cup (125ml) mild flavoured oil
½ cup (125ml) water
250g apple puree
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
50g glace cherries
50g raw almonds
3 tablespoons orange marmalade

METHOD
1. Preheat oven to 150oC and line a deep, 15cm round cake tin with baking paper.
2. Place the dried fruit, juice, orange zest and goji berries into a small pot and bring to the boil.
3. Boil for 30 seconds, remove from heat and set aside.
4. In a mixing bowl, whisk the apple puree, oil and water until smooth.
5. Add the Banana Bread Mix and whisk until smooth.
6. Fold through the plumped fruit and juice mix.
7. Combine well and spoon the batter into prepared cake tin.
8. Arrange the glace cherries and almonds on top of the cake.
9. Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Allow to cool.
10. To glaze add 1 tablespoon of water to marmalade in a small pot and warm over low heat until liquefied.
11. Use a pastry brush to glaze the top of the cake.
12. Store in cool spot in an airtight container.

 

APPLE & PEANUT BUTTER DOG TREATS

INGREDIENTS
1 tbls golden flaxmeal or chia
3 tbls water
1 cup grated apple
1/2 cup peanut butter
3/4 cup Monica’s Mixes Paleo Flour

METHOD
1. Mix flaxmeal or chia and water and let sit while you place the remaining ingredients in a bowl.
2. Add the flax mixture and mix to combine and make a stiff dough.
3. Press out the dough to a disc 2cm thick. Cut shapes with a cookie cutter.

4. Bake at 180oC for approx. 20 minutes until golden.
5. Allow to cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

NOTE! Monicas Mixes Paleo flour is grain free and contains coconut flour, green banana flour, sesame flour – great for shiny coats and good digestion!
