The Power of Eden’s Garden

‘TO CREATE POWERFUL HEALTH’: THIS IS THE MOTTO THAT EDEN HEALTH FOODS FOUNDER, STEVEN PRAHIN LIVES BY, AND WHY HE’S SO PASSIONATELY DRIVEN TO MAINTAIN THE GROWTH OF HIS BRAND.

Trying to overcome his own health issues, Steven began learning of the power of herbs and superfoods in healing. He became fascinated by studying the teachings of natural healers like Master Herbalists, Dr Richard Schulze and Dr John Christopher. They resonated with Steven’s belief in approaching health holistically and working with the body.

What stuck with him was that not all organics are equal and to ensure a therapeutic effect, quality ingredients are necessary. Steven found that often the programs, protocols and products weren’t strong enough or readily available to people who needed them.

Discovering how misleading some product ingredient lists could be and how many companies concentrated on profit margins over organic quality, Steven saw an opportunity in the market.

Steven knew he had to create trusted, completely transparent, high quality products for his own health and for the health of others.

Sourcing the highest quality organic and wild crafted ingredients available on the planet, he launched Eden Health Foods, bringing superior detox, probiotic, superfood and wholefood products to the market.

“I have a genuine desire to help people achieve powerful health.” – Steven Prahin.

Steven has ensured that no short cuts are ever taken, nor is their bottom line a concern.

His main focus is discovering ways to make the Eden Health Foods products even better, stronger and more effective in helping to achieve powerful health.

HOW FAR CAN A SIMPLE IDEA GO? IN AARON FISHMAN’S CASE, SIX-AND-A-HALF THOUSAND KILOMETRES TO EAST BALI.

Far enough to reveal an opportunity to package carbon neutral, delicious cashews and also change the lives of hundreds of local Balinese people living on less than two dollars a day.

With an itch for adventure and an overwhelming drive to better help the less fortunate, Aaron continuously discovered himself all over the globe, in situations he never expected. But the one trip that changed his life was a spontaneous journey he made with his wife to somewhere warm and interesting – East Bali.

It just so happened that they arrived during cashew season. So while Aaron taught the public health staff about wound care and nutrition, they taught him
about cashews.

When Aaron learned that the cashews where being shipped all the way to India and Vietnam for processing, he saw an opportunity to provide jobs, training, and produce uniquely “local” cashews.

80% of the cashews grown in Bali
are shipped overseas for processing.

His idea… to start a cashew processing facility right there in the Desa Ban community, decrease the cashew carbon footprint and employ women of farming families to better the community.

Since launching in 2012, East Bali Cashews has locally processed and packaged over a thousand tons of cashews, providing over 200 new jobs, with a 95%
female workforce.

East Bali Cashews

Surrounded by lush greenery, with ocean breezes and views of
Mt. Agung the East Bali Cashews factory location is pure serenity.

The brand offers a range of socially responsible cashew products in incredible flavours: Cacao, Chilli Crunch, Garlic Pepper, Native, Sea Salt, Sesame Ginger, Cashew Crumble and Popcorn with Caramel and Cashews.

Naturally sourced directly from farmers and extremely affordable, the East Bali Cashews range is incomparable to any of their competitors.

Business Has Gone Bananas!

NATURAL EVOLUTION FOUNDERS ROB AND KRISTA WATKINS ARE THE WORLD’S FIRST AND ONLY CERTIFIED PRODUCER OF GREEN BANANA RESISTANT STARCH AND GREEN BANANA FLOUR.

Recently the innovative brand shared their story to over 5000,000 viewers on Channel Ten’s popular program – The Project.

Despite this achievement they have retained their humbleness, working countless hours and tapping into their true passion for ultimate nutrition to keep innovating.

Where did such a fruitful, entrepreneurial business idea begin?

As a child, Rob grew watching his father pour all he had into their banana farm. Inspired by his fathers’ love for farming, Rob followed his footsteps and became one of Australia’s largest banana growers, specialising in lady fingers.

Rob has always been passionate about farming philosophy, believing that ultimate nutrition starts from the soil in which a plant is grown. So you can imagine his disappointment week after week, disposing hundreds of tonnes of perfectly nutritious and good for eating beautiful lady fingers – all because the bananas simply had the wrong ‘look’ for the shelves.

Every week, he watched as wallabies flocked and cattle broke fences, just to get to the ‘wasted’ bananas.

What interested Rob most was the way the animals always filled themselves with the discarded green bananas and left the ripened bananas untouched. He also noticed the increase in health the animals were experiencing – their coats were shinier and they appeared to have an abundance of energy.

What did the animals know that he did not? These green bananas were destined for something so much bigger then wallaby scraps.

The moment that changed everything was at dusk, one summer day in 2010. Rob had accidentally driven over a hand of lady fingers which crushed against the bitumen and created a dust in the sun’s glowing rays.

Already an eager inventor, developing breakthrough creations like a new field of invention machinery and the Banana Blankey (a fully recyclable packaging system), Rob was intrigued by this ‘banana dust’. His inquisitive nature questioned, could this be flour?

He found that not only could it be flour, but it was gluten free flour and one of the world’s highest resistant starch food sources.

Suffering from coeliac symptoms himself, Rob made a small 6kg batch of banana flour to use and sell in the family café. In a matter of weeks, the demand was greatly surpassing his supply; in fact he was months behind in requests. The market loved it!

This demand inspired Rob to refine the process of production. So back to his entrepreneurial ways, he invented the first and only peeling machine in the world, speeding up the process and drastically increasing output to approximately 300kg per week.

With demand still going bananas for their product, the Watkins secured a grant in August 2014 and built yet another world first – a pharmaceutical grade banana
flour factory.

They now have the facilities to produce eight tonnes of banana flour each week and have since continued to create more innovative green banana products.

In fact, the Department of Fisheries in Queensland has just released a very exciting study on the Natural Evolution  range of products, analysing the phytochemical composition and anti-microbial activity. You can read the results here.

The Name That Says It All – Extraordinary Foods

IT TAKES TIME TO BUILD SOMETHING THIS EXTRAORDINARY, BUT IT WAS WELL WORTH THE WAIT AND HARD WORK!

Originally from Moscow, Russia, Olga and Alex Plotnikova moved to the US in 2009. For five years they marvelled in the variety of vibrant, healthy food they had readily available at their fingertips and they quickly became hooked. It enriched their lives, making them more inspired and energised.

But this healthy obsession that developed in the US wasn’t the pinpoint that encouraged them to establish Extraordinary Foods. That moment came when they made the decision to move to Australia. Noticing that the variety of delicious raw and vegan food was not as easily accessible as it was in the US, they decided to step into the kitchen and start creating a brand of their own.

Their passion was in making food that nourished the body and also tasted amazing. They wanted Australians to know just how incredible healthy food could taste.

How Alex Plotnikova puts it, they were determined to create “A product I’d want to tear my shirt off for, Hulk Hogan style”.

Kale chips came first. With so many variables; ingredients, how fine or coarse the leaves should be torn, how long to dehydrate them, how much dressing to add and how coarse or smooth the dressing should be, many hours were invested into finding the perfect kale chip formulation.

They explored lots of different flavours before they found the three they fell in love with; Cashew Vegan “Cheese”, Garlic and Spices (with a kick of cayenne) and Onion and Dill.

Crunch time came when they presented Extraordinary Foods to the Australian Market and sold their very first packet at World Vegan Day in Melbourne in November 2013. In fact, they sold over 400 packs of their Kale Chips that day, running out hours before the event finished. The crunchy, light, full flavoured, Australian grown and handmade kale chips were a huge hit.

Humbled by the love Australians showed for their product, Olga and Alex got back into the kitchen to formulate new products to join the range. Since then, they have added tasty salad toppers. Their Pimp My Salad jars include Super Seed Sprinkles, Sunflower Seed Sprinkles and Kale Sprinkles.

What makes them so extraordinary is they still use organic, local ingredients and hand make everything in beautiful Byron Bay. There’s just as much love and time invested into each and every product as there was in the very beginning.

If it’s Extraordinary Foods, you’ll consistently find outstanding products with desirable textures and irresistible flavours.

After living in India for 15 years, Clive Lawler developed a strong interest in food – in particular super crunchy nuts. When he returned to Australia, he was determined to create healthy snacks as irresistible as those he’d learned to love in India.

With lots of home kitchen experimenting and determination, Clive launched 2die4 Live Foods to Byron Bay locals. In no time, demand for the 2die4 products was far surpassing supply.

This is when Clive reached out and partnered with Jon Henning.

Clean Green with Kin Kin Naturals

IT TAKES PASSION, KNOWLEDGE AND A WHOLE LOT OF COURAGE TO WALK AWAY FROM A HUGE CORPORATION TO BUILD A FAMILY BRAND COMPETING HEAD TO HEAD FOR THE SAME MARKET.

Eight years ago, husband and wife team, Felix and Sandy, had the guts to do just that. Felix walked away from his job as a global formulator for OMO and the family took a leap to launch the local rooted, 100% natural household cleaning brand – Kin Kin Naturals.

“I used to work as a global formulator for OMO – yes, that’s with the nasties, but also with the technical expertise on how to make cleaning products that actually work” Felix told us.

So what was it that inspired the movement from OMO to developing their own natural cleaning products?

It was a green change: alluring rainforest, lush rolling hills, adventurous walking trails, pristine Lake Cootharaba, the famous Great Sandy National Park and a local community full of creatives. These were all the things that came with a move to Kin Kin, a serene countryside town in the Noosa Hinterland, Queensland.

After the move, Felix began to develop the Kin Kin Naturals range, using his technical skills and only natural ingredients to make products that where close to the heart.

“Back in 2008 I took a year off to formulate my personal dream formulations and I took the prototypes to Dale at Unique.” Felix explained.

It wasn’t long until the family business came across their biggest struggle – keeping up with demand. Right from the start, they received an abundance of support. Australians embraced the Kin Kin Naturals cleaning products.

Implementing strong business strategies and keeping their product range small, Felix and Sandy are able to consistently provide their high quality natural dishwashing liquid, dishwasher powder, laundry liquid, laundry soaker and wool and delicates wash to the Australian market.

Felix decides what ingredients are used, based on whether he’s happy to ingest them and put them on his children’s skin. For instance, the products contain no SLS, LAS, alcohol ethoxylate, phosphate and only a fraction of the sodium (‘salt’) level of other brands.

Instead of using nasties, they opt for simple, often food-grade, natural ingredients. These include coconut soap, bicarb soda, oxygenated soda, citrate and essential oils.

“It’s a bit of an art to make a fully functional cleaning product; it’s about formulating
carefully to obtain the right balance between
the types of ingredients.” Felix says.

After Felix makes the product batches, Sandy then fills the bottles all from their little factory that’s a 200m stroll from their family home.

Everyday Felix bounces out of bed motivated to not only provide for his family, but also determined to make other peoples’ lives and our planet a bit healthier,
not worse.

Kin Kin Naturals

PHOTO: Felix, Sandy and their two children, Marijn and Pippa living the green life.

“It was quite liberating to quit life in the big industry and set up our own little business, with complete freedom to choose our ingredients rather than the ingredients being determined just by cost.” Felix told us.

With such quality, natural products, many Kin Kin Naturals customers call, email and even send postcards to congratulate Felix and Sandy and thank them for their amazing products.

“We often hear from people with a skin condition, that they no longer have to use gloves when doing the dishes after switching to Kin Kin Naturals… that puts a smile on my face every time.” Felix says.

By switching to the natural products, Kin Kin Naturals customers have prevented about 20,000kg of ingredients classified as ‘very toxic to aquatic organisms’ to be used and disposed so far.

This is only the beginning for this inspirational brand. As more awareness and demand for natural cleaning products comes to light, Kin Kin Naturals plans to broaden the range with some new exciting essential oil blends in the pipeline.

Bounce Balls – What a Hit!

A BACKGROUND IN HEALTH AND FITNESS AND A BURNING DREAM TO HELP PEOPLE LIVE WELL AND FEEL GOOD…

That’s what saw Andy and Paula, husband and wife co-owners of Bounce create, package and sell the very first Bounce Ball.

It wasn’t easy, describing the journey as a rollercoaster, but the passionate duo have loved every step. When times were tough they would ask ‘why are we doing this?’, to which they would always rediscover their motivation and humbly answer ‘because we’re meant to be doing this’.

It all started in 2004, with a leap of faith they invested what little savings they worked hard to gather and for the first time delved into the world of nutrition. The goal was to create grab ‘n go ‘clean nutrition’ products by using high quality ingredients and leaving out nasties like refined sugars, artificial colours, flavours and preservatives. With bars saturating the market, a different approach was taken to create a range of balls that were full of real, natural ingredients.

At the beginning there was no business plan, things were done based on trying to make it all come together while working with the environment they had. There were pallets in Paula and Andy’s garage and the balls were also picked and packed in their home. Building the business from the ground up, at first saw Andy knocking on doors in the hope to sell his balls (…a humorous tale that’s still a running joke at Bounce). Now the popular protein ball brand has expanded their range to include nutritious shakes and their products are enjoyed globally, with an established office in Australia, the UK and USA.

Going beyond just a healthy food company, Bounce has evolved into a lifestyle proposition with ‘The Bounce Effect’ which is their guiding philosophy. It combines their love of good food, passion for healthy living and desire to learn, grow and make a difference.

April Catalogue Blog Posts-7

Bounce products were not just made to be healthy (with gluten and dairy free options), but also to be scrumptious. With no need to refrigerate, consumers are able to throw their favourite flavour into their gym bag, purse, office draw or lunch box, making Bounce Balls the perfect healthy grab ‘n go snack.

Profile: Tom Organic – An Organic Lady Lifestyle

IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE, BUT AUSTRALIA’S LEADING ORGANIC FEMININE HYGIENE RANGE ALL BEGAN WITH A SINGLE HIGH SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT.

Founder of TOM Organic, Aimee Marks, was given a re-design assignment in her grade 12 graphic design class that left her questioning the sustainability and toxicity of the feminine hygiene products on offer at the time.

While many of Aimee’s friends went on to travel, Aimee stayed focus on her goal graduating from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) with a Bachelor of Business, Majoring in Entrepreneurship. Aimee identified a strong demand in the market for organic feminine hygiene products and was committed to creating the purest products imaginable.

Aimee started TOM Organic when she
was only 23 years old.

After putting her university skills to practice, along with long hours of research and relationship building, she was thrilled to see her organic products go to market
in 2010.

Originally the products on offer consisted of Australian Certified Organic cotton tampons, pads and liners. The range has since branched into pregnancy products, with the addition of maternity pads and nursing pads. The brand has evolved beyond their products, with a focus on women’s lives for generations to come by exercising ethical and social responsibility. They support many organisations including Sacred Heart Mission Women’s House in St Kilda, The Nappy Collective, Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation and One Girl.

Tom Organic Break Out box

More and more women are turning to products that offer the ultimate in purity and breathability. While many tampons in the market are made from non-biodegradable material, TOM Organic tampons are made from just a single ingredient, organic cotton, making them 100% biodegradable.

TOM Organic are just as concerned about developing products that are healthy for women on the inside, as they are concerned about developing a company that’s healthy for the earth that we live, work and play in. Aimee ensures that ethical and social responsibility is practiced with everything they do, which earnt TOM Organic the highly regarded B- Corporation Certification in 2012.
